The 13th Book Review

About Shadow Stephens Story telling seems to be a part of my DNA. Since childhood, I made up fantastical characters and brought them to life. Part of it was to escape the turmoils of childhood and some were just for fun. Sitting beside my couch is a constant stack of history, biographies, and compelling fiction, which means I have many overloaded bookshelves. Wouldn't that be great to have a room just full of shelves? I would love to see a wave of outstanding, self-published authors take over the market. I think it's important to own your work and take pride in it. Writing several novels and short stories, I know the trials of writing and rejection. Constructive criticism can only make you better. Review - This is the first book I have read by Shadow Stephens. I had a hard time putting this book down. I loved the characters in the story. Jade and Asher have a wonderful connection. I also love the characters that are considered outcasts in the book; Caratacus and Joe. I even love the raven James. The story flowed wonderfully and I could picture myself there will reading the book. This book had me on the edge of my seat with the mystery and suspense. There were some twists and turns that I did not foresee happening. This is a highly enjoyable read.

The story is about Jade, who is the 13th generation witch of her bloodline. Jade and Asher come from a town full of witches who specialize in certain areas. Jade justs moves back to the town of Strega Bluff and she is trying to get her shop up and running. She starts being haunted by a evil ghost and people that she love is being affected by it. Jade and Asher with the help of some unlikely friends join together to solve this problem before everyone Jade loves winds up dead. Will she defeat him or will he be to powerful? I gave this read a 5 star review! Can't wait to read more by this author!

Enjoy this little preview of SHADOW CAY!

Madeleine knew the people of Highbourne Cay were excited about the maiden voyage. Caribbe allowed them to see the islands in a new way. She imagined cruising on foils that lifted the ferry’s hull completely out of the water.

Odd, even though it was dead calm, a rustle of wind swept across her shoulder, and she heard a faint sound like the brushing of humming bird wings. With her fingers secure in Rollo’s massive hand, she treaded the plank and boarded the ferry. She got only a glimpse of a man on the main deck, but it was enough. He didn’t look like an islander or a deckhand.

Tall, dressed in crew whites and as stiff as one of her toy wooden soldiers, he stood behind the open bow doors. Like oil, the man’s eyes slid from one passenger to another until he frowned in her direction. She glanced away, avoided his stare, looking down at the deck, studying his cowboy boots. The crew was supposed to wear boat shoes, not cowboy boots. Usually she had difficulty accepting rules she didn’t make; suddenly following rules was important.

For a fleeting second, she wished she were home with her parents. That’s when the pain hit her in the middle of her forehead.

“Rollo, I changed my mind. Let’s go some other time with Mom and Dad.”

“What’s wrong, Maddy?” he asked gently.

“My head hurts.”

“The fresh air will do you good.” He patted her shoulder reassuringly.

She didn’t respond. Her hand tightened on the railing, as she and Rollo continued climbing the stairs to the top deck.

Madeleine leaned into the railing and watched the seascape glide past makeshift docks, beyond the reach of roads into a vast area of coral reefs. Islands appeared to rise from the sound, then reappeared time and again in the form of small cays, creating a continuing landscape. Thirty minutes later she rested in a deck chair, oblivious of the time.

A sickening jolt spilled her onto the floor. She heard an awful crunch, then a loud crash. Water gushed through the doors onto the lower deck. She didn’t understand how the best ferry in the entire world could take on water. Nothing was supposed to happen to the best, but she wasn’t so sure.

What Kind of Vampire Do You Prefer?

There have been many views of what constitutes vampire lore. Authors put their own creative spin on the legends to suit their storylines.

First, there’s the biggest vampire franchise of late created by Stephanie Meyers.

Twilight vampires: the most famous vampire in this group is Edward, the brooding vampire in love with the teenager Bella. With the outstanding success of the books and movies, this franchise has been one of the biggest money making ventures for vampires, maybe even the most successful one aimed at the young adult market. The Twilight vampires do not burn up in the sun, but instead “sparkle.”  This is an entirely new “spin” on vampire lore.

In the 1970’s author Anne Rice released her book, “Interview with a Vampire” featuring vampires Lestat , Louis and 12-year-old Claudia. The book was adapted to film in 1994. It’s their story as told by Louis to a San Francisco reporter. The vampires in this movie are vicious, drink human blood and cannot go out in the sun because the sun’s rays will burn and turn them into ash.

One of the many adaptations of Bram Stoker’s book, “Dracula” stars Frank Langella in the 1979 film of the same name. In this highly romanticized version, Count Dracula arrives in England in 1913 from Transylvania aboard a ship that breaks up on the rocks during a storm. During the wreckage of the ship, a wolf is seen jumping from its deck and then the Count himself is found on the shore. This story follows the more traditional legends of vampires, that is, that they can also shape shift. Even though Count Dracula is a charismatic figure, there is no mistake that he’s vicious and has no compunction in killing and drinking his victim’s blood.  But, man, oh man, is Frank Langella one sexy vampire. It could be that it was due in large part to his voice. I’m a sucker for a great voice. I prefer this version of vampire lore with the shape shifting in addition to not being able to walk in the sun.

These are just three different viewpoints on vampire legends and lore. So what’s your favorite kind of vampire?

Grade A Stupid Book Blast

Grade A StupidGrade A Stupid

Fifteen years ago, Darcy Walker’s parents thought it was a good idea to give her a unique name: Darcy, meaning “dark walker.” Whether that was a stroke of genius or stroke of stupid, they definitely nailed the irony. She lacks direction, her grades stink despite a high IQ, she’s boringly average--although flirting admirers claim otherwise--and God help her, she’s infatuated with a bad-boy. A bad-boy that her hottie best friend, Dylan, wishes would get acquainted with his fist. And, oh yeah, there’s that tattoo that was a royally stupid idea. With her life spiraling out of control, everything changes when she skips class and finds a dead body…in fact, it gets worse. It jump-starts Darcy’s inner-verb, and her AD/HD mind gets caught up in a situation she can’t let go. Set in the fictional Cincinnati town of Valley, Ohio, Darcy falls into a world of threats, violence, and gangland exploits, chasing down every clue to finger the murderer. When a fellow misfit is arrested for the crime, Darcy goes from zero-to-sixty trying to clear his name—constructing aliases, breaking the law, everything that makes perfect sense to her, but reeks of Grade A Stupid to everyone else. Trouble is…will she live to see 16?

When her sister trusts a maverick researcher’s promise to help Steven, September has 24 hours to rescue them from a devastating medical experiment impacting millions of children, a deadly secret others will kill to protect. As September races the clock, the body count swells. Shadow does his good-dog duty but can’t protect his boy. Finally September and Shadow forge a stormy partnership to rescue the missing and stop the nightmare cure. But can they also find the lost parts of themselves?

Our review: This book hit several notes with me: I am a huge lover of animals, and I am aunt to two boys on the autism spectrum, so I definitely related to the story on that basis. But even without that connection, I would have enjoyed this fast-moving, well-developed tale. Using the animals' points of view was a gutsy literary choice, but it paid off; that aspect lent an entirely new dimension to a book that breaks the molds while spinning a compelling story.  An enjoyable yet thought-provoking read. Don't miss it.

PHANTOM Tour and Giveaway!

Phantom

The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card. Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars—Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist. Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed. Kindle / Paperback

Our Review:  I was given this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Phantom by Laura De Luca is a wonderful depiction of a modern day Phantom of the Opera.

This is a classic high school tale of a young girl who finds herself attracted to the popular boy at school--the one who hardly notices her. Rebecca tries out for her favorite play, The Phantom of the Opera, and gets the role of the lead, Christine. She finds out that maybe the popular boy isn’t totally out of her reach. But now Rebecca must decide whom she really has feelings for: Tom, the popular guy, or Justyn, the new guy who is cast as the Phantom.

This isn’t Rebecca’s only problem now, as she discovers she is living a life that closely resembles her character, Christine. People are dying, and the play Rebecca loves so much is seemingly coming to life with the villain staying in the shadows.

Laura De Luca develops wonderful and complex characters who captivate the reader; she weaves an addicting romantic mystery.  I highly recommend this book!

About Ty Hutchinson Hello. My name is Ty Hutchinson and I’m from Hawaii. What does that mean? I don’t need to tan. I'm the author of the best selling Darby Stansfield novels. Readers have described them as Tarantino meets The Office with a splash of romance. Let me know if you agree. My latest release is Corktown, the first book in my new Abby Kane series. I'm very excited about it. Before this whole author thing came up, I spent twenty-two years in advertising writing stuff that irritates you. I've stopped that. When I'm not writing thrillers, you'll find me traveling the world, playing video games, eating and reading, or watching HGTV. Yup, me likey the HGTV. Don't hate. A DIARY'S HOUSE REVIEW and GIVEAWAY

A Diary's House: Where True Love Endures

A Diary’s House is about adventure, lost love, and the hope that dreams, even those in the final years of life, can at last prevail. It is of a young boy’s attempt to become a man, the once-lost secrets of a diary, a sweeping romance which transcends time and place. It is more than a boy’s journey into manhood, but the mysteries of so many lives unknowingly intertwined, now brought together in a climatic ending; all from the engrossing world embedded in a forgotten diary; a diary of a woman. Born in the vast and looming mountains of North Carolina during the 1870’s, Landon Hampshire always remembered the folklore and legendary tales his father told him during his early childhood; about the people of the Kituhwa (Cherokee) and the birth of this tribal nation – an enchanting story he could never forget. Incorporating the aid of an eccentric old French trapper (old man Montague), Landon and his friends set out on an adventure, their initial intention is to discover treasure and become men. But what Landon will eventually come to discover is more than he ever bargained for. Landon didn't realize his boyhood adventure would yield the incredible journey he ultimately experiences - going down the mysterious and mystical Randola River. At the base of the river is an island even more mysterious than the Randola itself. The island releases many of its mysterious, yet even many more are created when Landon discovers, on the island, a diary of a young woman who lived forty years prior during the 1830’s (Trail of Tears). The diary entries are hopeful, though haunting. It reveals, in intimate detail, the life and dreams of this very special young girl who is turning into a woman of beauty and adventure, her love for a Cherokee boy, and the trials she will ultimately face. Her story unfolds through the reading of her diary, and Landon suddenly finds himself caught up in a sweeping, empowering world of re-invention and ultimate redemption. C. David Murphy I am a writer; first and foremost. Anyone who reads my works will instantly know this. I have found no greater joy on this earth than to be close to God and nature; exploring the serenity of landscapes, waterfalls, epic mountains, meadows and grasslands. To sit on those spots of earth and write to where my imagination will take me yields a tremendous amount of peace and serenity.. To create characters with true and genuine emotions, feel their heartbeat thru every word I write; their trails, their hopes and ambitions; to breathe life into their eyes and see their soul become one with me and the reader is absolutely amazing. I simply love to create on that venue and canvas; to affect change in the lives of others. It is my hope, when someone picks up my stories and reads the full weight of them, that somehow I have affected change in their lives, brought them to places they could never have imagined before, and moved them to believe in humanity again – to go out into the world and create ‘goodwill towards all’. The Diary’s House is C David Murphy’s first digitally published novel. He is also the author of two Shakespearean-style genre plays In the Years of the Ages and Hildengrass. He is currently finalizing his next novel, When Tomorrow Never Comes and The Chronicles of Good and Evil – Dracula’s Lair / The Darkest Tower, both due out later this year. Also, the sequel to A Diary’s House is in the works – The Long Journey Home due out the first part of 2013. Follow Blog / Twitter / Facebook / Goodreads Buy Amazon /Barnes & Noble /Smashwords / Kobo

Our review: This book was a beautiful quilt of love, family, history and legend, sewn together with the thread of a coming-of-age adventure. The characters were engaging, and the diary wistfully evocative. The prose was deep and insightful. The author winds together all these threads into an engaging and sweet story.
